DJI Unveils Innovative Privacy Mode for Drone Users
Empowering Operators to Fly Securely Without Online Connectivity
New Local Data Mode Enhances Data Protection Standards
In an exciting development for drone enthusiasts and professionals, DJI, the leading company in aerial imaging and civilian drone technology, has launched a cutting-edge feature known as Local Data Mode. This new mode is designed to bolster data privacy for sensitive operations by eliminating internet traffic associated with the DJI Pilot app.
Boosting Data Privacy for Unique Needs
The Local Data Mode will soon be accessible via an update to the DJI Pilot app, available on CrystalSky and specific Android tablets. When engaged, this mode blocks all incoming and outgoing internet data, providing an extra layer of security for operators involved in projects related to critical infrastructure, governmental initiatives, and other sensitive missions. Brendan Schulman, DJI’s Vice President of Policy and Legal Affairs, highlighted the intent behind this feature: “We are creating Local Data Mode to address the needs of our enterprise customers, including public and private organizations that are using DJI technology for sensitive operations around the globe.” He further assured that DJI is dedicated to preserving the privacy of its customers’ aerial footage and flight records.
Understanding the Functionality
With Local Data Mode activated, users will notice that the DJI Pilot app will no longer provide real-time location tracking, map visuals, or important geofencing data, including No Fly Zones and temporary flight restrictions. Additionally, drone operators will not receive notifications for firmware updates while in this mode. Importantly, telemetry data—such as altitude, distance, and speed—will remain stored on the aircraft, even if the user decides to deactivate Local Data Mode.
All photos and videos captured during flights will consistently be saved on the drone’s SD card, giving users control over when and where to share their content. Operators can easily enable Local Data Mode by launching the DJI Pilot app, selecting the “Activate LDM Mode” option, and entering a password, required for future deactivation when they wish to return to internet connectivity.
Key Considerations
While Local Data Mode offers enhanced privacy, it is crucial for drone operators to recognize their responsibility for flight operation safety. Without internet connectivity, certain features designed to support safe operations may be inaccessible. Users of new drones will need to log into their DJI accounts to activate their devices initially. Those looking to keep their firmware updated should do so before engaging Local Data Mode while online.
Customer-Centric Approach
DJI’s commitment to heightened data security and customer satisfaction shines through in this feature. Walter Stockwell, DJI’s Director of Technical Standards, expressed enthusiasm for this development, stating, “We are pleased to be able to develop Local Data Mode as part of our drive to advocate for our customers’ interests.” However, it is worth noting that Local Data Mode might not be available in areas where a stable internet connection is mandated by local regulations.
For those eager to explore DJI’s new Local Data Mode, the latest version of the DJI Pilot app can be downloaded at DJI’s official site for the Matrice 200 series.
