DJI Sets New Standards with the First C1 Drone Certificate
Enhanced Freedom for Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine Pilots
Exciting news in the drone world! On December 8, 2022, DJI, the renowned global leader in civilian drone technology and innovative camera systems, announced the initiation of the application process for the coveted C1 class identification label for its Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine drones. This groundbreaking development marks the world’s first issuance of a C1 certification for drones under the new European regulations.
Starting December 9, Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine users can voluntarily request this certification at no additional cost. The straightforward process requires the submission of the drone’s serial number and verification that the necessary firmware update has been completed to qualify for the C1 certification. Notably, all future firmware updates for these drones will integrate the essential technical adjustments associated with the C1 certificate, ensuring compliance with new standards.
The Benefits of C1 Certification
What does the C1 certificate entail for drone pilots? It opens the door to numerous advantages. Primarily, users will have the ability to operate in the A1 Open Category, relieving them from the obligation of passing the A2 “Remote Piloting License” exam, which can often be complex and costly. This means significantly enhanced freedom for users to enjoy flying in environments previously restricted without the C1 certification—a considerable benefit for many drone enthusiasts.
This certification, issued by TÜV Rheinland—the officially recognized notified body—holds validity across the European Economic Area (EEA), which encompasses the European Union along with Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. The certification applies to both the Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine models, provided they are equipped with the updated firmware.
Operational Differences: C1 Certified vs. Non-Certified
The transition to C1 certification means distinct differences in operational capabilities between Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine users. Here’s a glimpse into these differences:
Operating Area | Operational Restrictions | Pilot Competence |
---|---|---|
With C1 Certificate Flying in the A1 Open Category (post-December 31, 2023) |
– No flying over uninvolved people (minimize risks) – No flying over gatherings of people |
– Read user manual – Obtain A1/A3 “Proof of Competence” certification through an online exam |
Without C1 Certificate Flying in the A2 Open Category until December 31, 2023; then, A3 Open Category from January 1, 2024 |
– No flying over uninvolved people – Maintain a minimum horizontal distance of 50 m from people until December 31, 2023; thereafter 150 m from properties |
– Read user manual – Obtain A2 “Remote Piloting License” via an online exam and self-declaration of practical training |
This certification is also accompanied by mandatory adjustments required under European Drone Regulation. Notably, the Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine must meet a stringent noise reduction level of 83 dB. Furthermore, features like ActiveTrack Intelligent Flight Mode will have limitations to maintain a safe distance from people, and the drone’s LED indicators will adjust automatically based on the environment.
These transformative updates promise to significantly impact the user experience for Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine pilots, creating opportunities for safer flight operations and fewer restrictions across European airspace.
