Call for Necessary Revisions to Promote Safe Drone Use

Highlighted Issues with the Draft Regulations

DJI has identified several critical issues with the proposed regulations:

• Insurance Burdens: A notable mandatory insurance requirement of $100,000 for any drone exceeding 250 grams—equivalent to less than two hockey pucks—could deter schools, hobbyists, and students from using drones for educational or recreational purposes, particularly in fields like science and engineering.
• Proximity Restrictions: The stipulation that drones cannot be flown within 100 feet of people would effectively render it illegal for many Canadians to operate small drones in their own backyards. This could substantially limit personal enjoyment and small-scale innovation.
• Certifying Requirements for Manufacturers: The regulations impose a burdensome requirement for manufacturers to certify their products to unspecified standards before allowing certain professional operations in Canada. In contrast, similar products have been operating under recognized standards in the United States for over a year.
