California Team Triumphs at $100,000 DJI SDK Search And Rescue Challenge
A Global Search and Rescue Competition Fueled by DJI, Ford, and the UNDP Showcases Innovative Solutions for Disaster Response
Key Takeaways
- The Autero team from San Rafael, California, won the prestigious DJI SDK Search And Rescue Challenge.
- Ten finalists showcased groundbreaking technology that autonomously operates drones in disaster scenarios.
- The competition underscores a commitment to leveraging advanced technology to enhance search and rescue efforts worldwide.
- Over 130 proposals were submitted, highlighting the global interest in innovative solutions for emergency response.
On August 28, 2016, in a thrilling demonstration of innovation and skill, DJI—one of the foremost manufacturers of unmanned aerial vehicles—along with esteemed partners Ford Motor Company and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), hosted the annual SDK Challenge in Rome, New York. The spotlight of the event was undoubtedly the winning team, Autero, hailing from San Rafael, California, which outperformed nine other talented finalists to claim the coveted $100,000 grand prize.
Innovative Solutions for Real-World Problems
The challenge required participants to utilize DJI’s Software Development Kit (SDK) to develop programs that propelled DJI drones from a moving Ford F-150 pickup truck. These drones autonomously navigated through simulated disaster zones, identified victims, and then safely returned to land back on their launch vehicle. Such technological advancements exemplify how drones can revolutionize search and rescue operations, potentially saving lives in genuine emergency situations.
Voices of Support
Robert Schlub, Vice President of Research and Development at DJI, expressed his gratitude to all participants, particularly the finalists, acknowledging their commitment to life-saving innovation. “Today’s challenge brought together some of the brightest minds in the developer community,” Schlub stated. “Their collaboration towards developing cutting-edge search and rescue technologies represents a significant leap forward in disaster response.”
Don Butler, Ford’s Executive Director of Connected Vehicles and Services, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the synergy achieved through collaboration with both DJI and the UNDP. “This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to enhance people’s lives through technology, and we are proud to be a part of it,” Butler remarked.
A Hub for Unmanned Aerial Research
Senator Charles E. Schumer also weighed in on the event, praising the Griffiss Test Site as a pivotal location for the research and development of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). “It is inspiring to see drone research teams from around the globe showcase their lifesaving capabilities here,” he noted. “This partnership with Ford, the United Nations, and DJI is another step forward for our region, which has been instrumental in advancing UAS technology.”
Emerging Industry Leader
Howard Zemsky, President, CEO & Commissioner of Empire State Development, highlighted New York’s leadership in the burgeoning unmanned aircraft systems industry. “Events like the SDK Challenge and the upcoming 2016 UTM Convention in Syracuse demonstrate the innovative potential of the UAS industry and our commitment to pushing its boundaries,” he stated.
A Competitive Spirit
This year’s DJI Developer Challenge attracted an impressive array of entries, with a record 130 proposals submitted from around the globe. The ten finalists ranged from universities to research groups and utilized DJI’s SDK in crafting their unique solutions—each showcasing their ingenuity in a competitive disaster scenario at the FAA-designated drone test site at Griffiss International Airport.
Professional-quality photographs and videos of the compelling competition are expected to be available in the following week, capturing the excitement and creativity displayed during this significant event.
